Vauxhall is set to tighten its already strong grip on the MPV segment with the all-new Zafira Tourer. The newcomer, which is be positioned above the current Zafira in Vauxhall’s line up, will set new standards in flexibility and innovation when order banks open on November 1, prior to the car hitting UK showrooms early next year.
The all-new model builds on the chart-topping success of the well-proven Zafira, while offering improved cabin space, upgraded materials and even greater levels of innovation from the upgraded Flex7 seating arrangement.
With class-leading levels of luxury and prices starting at just £21,000 (more than £1,200 less than the Ford S-Max) the seven -seat Zafira Tourer is expected not only to attract traditional MPV customers, but also those customers who may never have considered such a vehicle.
The Zafira Tourer combines a compelling mix of cabin flexibility with many features and technologies taken from the luxury car sector. There are multiple seating configurations, including ‘Lounge Seating’ on key models, as well as a raft of new features, such as Vauxhall’s new Front Camera system and state-of-the-art infotainment.
But what really defines the Zafira Tourer is its use of quality cabin materials, which sets new class standards. Vauxhall’s Vice President of Design, Mark Adams, has created a spacious and inviting environment for occupants, offering near-panoramic views for driver and passengers. Now, this new model bearing the Zafira name is transformed from a utilitarian people carrier into a flexible limousine that many executive car drivers would feel comfortable living with.
Since 1999, the two iterations of the current Vauxhall Zafira have dominated the compact MPV sector in the UK. Across Europe, 2.2 million have been sold, with almost a quarter of those sales coming from the UK.
And that performance has not diminished in recent years. In 2010, the Vauxhall Zafira was top of its segment in total, fleet and retail sales in the UK with a 24.3 per cent share of the total Compact MPV market after registering more than 30,000 units. The Renault Scenic had the next biggest share, though with 11,346 fewer sales than the Zafira.
In 2011, the Zafira was as popular as ever, commanding top slot in total and fleet sales to date. With 14,855 sales to the end of August, Zafira sales represent 18.1 per cent of the compact MPV market, and combined with Vauxhall’s other compact MPV, the Meriva, they account for 36.1 per cent share of the compact MPV segment.
