Known as a hands-on, straight-to-the point man, Ed Whitacre did not lose much time after committing to fund Opel/Vauxhall’s road to success internally to come and see for himself a business renowned across the ocean for its engineering excellence, outstanding design and high manufacturing standards.
A few days sufficed to tour factories in Germany and the UK, visit Opel/Vauxhall’s engineering and design centres, meet a few executives and, most importantly, speak to many of the Opel/Vauxhall workforce, thus reaching out directly to the very heart of the business. And the employees’ engagement, true commitment and strive for excellence in everything they do was not going to leave the Man-in-Charge untouched.
Ed Whitacre said: “In Europe not only are the products fine-tuned to the customers’ needs and expectations but also the way they are brought to market. That’s how a relatively small country such as the UK can live up against giants like China, the US and Russia and become General Motors’ fourth largest market.”
General Motors’ CEO left the country, knowing that on top of a safe and sound investment, he had secured the foundations of a long and fruitful co-operation between the productive forces of two continents.
