The UK’s hottest car boot fair returns to the Old Truman Brewery for a day of frivolity, fabulous entertainments and high end art bargains

The Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair, a permanent fixture in the London summer calendar, has quickly established a name for being the perfect occasion to hang out with some of the best British artists and grab a few art bargains to boot.

Now in its sixth year, this fabulous Ashton and Hayward curated event remains true to its feisty nature, and announces a wrestling, wrangling, grappling and gaming theme.

A wrestling ring centrepiece will feature bouts of old school wrestling interspersed with some arty in-fighting and in-between-bout secret auction thrills as this year’s crowds snap up Lucha Libre inspired original artworks from the UK’s most famous artists, the freshest talents and the coolest trend setters.

Top name artists Martin Creed, Bob and Roberta Smith, Ian Monroe and style icon Pam Hogg are just a few of those returning to sell works from their car boots. In classic boot fair style, Sir Peter Blake will sell a unique limited edition ‘wrestler’ inspired artwork at an astonishing price from the boot of a Vauxhall, and the rumour is that YBA Gavin Turk will present a retrospective of all his previous Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair works, celebrating his ongoing support of the event.

Continuing the boot fair’s support of fresh talent, sizzling young Catlin Art Prize curator Justin Hammond has been invited to curate a section of the car park this year. Art pieces by poet, artist, film-maker, musician and painter extraordinaire Billy Childish, in collaboration with ex-KLF superstar artist Jimmy Cauty, will complete the offer. Last but not least, the critically acclaimed event of 2009, The Museum of Everything, will bring its magic atmosphere to Brick Lane.

Brand new car commissions selected by Karen Ashton will include artist Ian Dawson and his amazing ‘Spiro car’; a full list of the 2010 car commissions will follow up shortly.

Reflecting Vauxhall Motors’ commitment to support style and design, the Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair nurtures artistic creativity among established and emerging names and represents a fun and accessible way for everyone to enjoy top quality art bargains at affordable prices.

Haggling for bargains is not the only attraction of the day; after snapping up cool and quirky art pieces you can treat yourself to exotic cocktails from the East Room bar. Fuel up for artful games and gaming with “Something Gamey in a Bun” from St John Bread and Wine. Indulge in five minutes of “Compliments and Flattery” before a quick leg up with the Cinemoi Can Can girls and their “Boules in a Chine Shop” antics, or you can just relax, and enjoy ultimate fun generators Bethnal Green Working Men Club’s unmissable acts.

Grab your diary and save the date, Sunday 6th June, for a chance to get your hands on some art bargains and cheer on the wrestlers and wranglers at the coolest boot fair of the year!

Editor’s Notes

Ashton & Hayward

Ashton & Hayward was set up by Karen Ashton & Helen Hayward as a curating and producing partnership to develop independent arts projects. Their approach is to work on energised one-off events or series of projects that celebrate art and frivolity and present artists and artworks in interesting and involving ways to their audience.

In 2003 they developed the Art Car Boot Fair Project, beginning with the 2003 London to Brighton Art Car Boot Fair and Rally as part of the Brighton Photo Biennial.

This was followed by the standalone and hugely successful 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008  and 2009 Art Car Boot Fair events in London working with a variety of artists, performers, fashion designers and DJ’s.

Through Art Car Boot Fair projects, Karen Ashton is developing ideas for spin-off events which share a similar ethos for 2010.

Vauxhall

Vauxhall has been involved with the curators of the Art Car Boot Fair since 2003 when it supplied a host of cars for a boot fair with a difference at the Brighton Photo Biennial. Since then Vauxhall’s commitment has gone from strength-to-strength, through supporting the five previous ACBF events in Brick Lane via artist commissions and supplying boots galore for artists to sell their wares.

With an ongoing commitment to championing style and design in the UK, British car marquee Vauxhall is a keen supporter of creativity through initiatives such as the Vauxhall Collective, the Vauxhall Fashion Scout, and the Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair.
